Heaven’s Door Double Barrel Whiskey Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

Heaven’s Door Double Barrel Whiskey is an interesting release and I wish the company would give a bit more information about it. I’m assuming it’s not all bourbon mash bills since they never mention the word. From the smell and taste, I don’t think they used a single malt unless it’s a small percentage. Then, there’s the consideration of what they’re already putting out and what’s available in the market.

Heaven's Door Double Barrel Whiskey

It carries no state designator so it’s possibly, and likely, a mix of bourbon and rye mash bills from Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana. It would be nice to know more, but truly, It’s not important where they came from and who made them. What’s important is the end result of their efforts which we’ll get into right now in the whiskey review below.

Heaven’s Door Double Barrel Whiskey Review: Details and Tasting Notes

In Heaven’s Door’s Words:

Comprised of a unique blend of three different whiskeys, the Heaven’s Door Double Barrel finishing process utilizes hand toasted, new American Oak barrels for a secondary aging worthy of another year’s wait. Double Barrel’s high proof balances perfectly with the complexity of its flavor and notes of caramel, oak, citrus, and spice.

Heaven’s Door Double Barrel Whiskey Review: Overall and Score

Smells like a darkly sweet and heavy bourbon. The aroma is deep, dark and delightful; Palate is more delicate than expected based on the aroma, but still wrangles in a good amount of depth; Finish is a complimentary coupling and fade of the two.

Like with most Scottish blends we don’t know what went into this whiskey and even though I just made the Scotch comparison, it doesn’t keep me from wishing I knew… just like I do with all Scotch blends. Not because I want to use them as points on a perceived value scale, but because I’m just truly curious about what goes into making the whiskeys I enjoy.

Pushing aside, the curiosity and getting back to the spirit, Heaven’s Door Double Barrel Whiskey is – simply – a good whiskey. It’s balanced, it’s tasty, it’s fun and it’s something I can see working well in cocktails. Several of the main notes remind me of George Dickel so I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some in there. The spice notes ring a bit more rye-like so I wouldn’t be surprised if some MGP rye was also employed. Both of whom they seem to have a relationship with.

Anyways, it’s good and that’s what really matters so I’m going to stop overthinkin’ and go back to sippin’.

SCORE: 88/100 (B+)
