Posted on the 29 April 2020 by Health_news

Red Light Therapy (RLT) is also popularly known as Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), Low Power laser Therapy (LPLT), and Soft Laser Therapy, etc.

What Is Red Light Therapy (RLT)?

RLT is a controversial treatment that uses low wavelength red light or near-infrared light. It is used to treat many skin issues including scars, early signs of aging, wounds, etc and also treats many other health issues.

How Does it Actually Work?

Red Light Therapy is basically, a red light that is exposed to your skin from a device. It tends to produce a biochemical effect in the cells that strengthen the mitochondria which are the powerhouse of the cell, the place where the energy of the cells is created. The molecules that carry energy are found in the cells of the living beings and it is known as ATP(adenosine triphosphate). Every living thing on this planet needs ATP to survive and we need natural light to strengthen the process every single day.

Red and near-infrared wavelengths can be used to stimulate the function of the mitochondria that are responsible for converting food into usable energy for cellular respiration to take place. By using RLT we can increase the functionality of the mitochondria so that it can take more energy and function more efficiently; this repairs the internal damage of the body by themselves.

The Red Light emitted is usually harmless and doesn't burn or cause damage to the skin unlike other treatments as it uses very low levels of heat and the light penetrates only about 5mm under the surface of the skin.

What Does RLT Treat?

  • Many people choose RLT because it can improve your skin's health. RLT can increase collagen production in the skin that is responsible to give your skin its elasticity. Other than this, the RLT can also reduce fine lines and wrinkles by improving the texture of your skin.
  • Sunlight can help you calm the sebaceous glands that produce sebum that might clog the pores of your skin and cause acne. RLT is an effective treatment for acne as it penetrates deep into your skin and reduces the production of sebum. So it ultimately results in the reduction of acne.
  • In a small study, a group of people with alopecia were treated with low-level red light for a few weeks. The result showed a visible improvement in the hair density compared to people who were told to use fake RLT devices. The best wavelength for hair growth is 655nm, at this point molecules can easily absorb the red light and result in the growth of hair follicles.
  • When a person undergoes RLT, it treats certain skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, etc. The anti-inflammatory properties visibly reduced itching and discomfort caused on the skin.

There are many Red Light Therapy devices available online and there are many salons that use them. But if you are planning to undergo Red Light Therapy, you must see your doctor. Otherwise, it might lead to many other side-effects.
