Staff members at the Mold office of Smurfit Kappa, a leading paper packaging firm, have taken part in a health and safety awareness week. The aim of the week-long event was to teach employees the basics of health and safety at work and at home.
On the very first day of the awareness week, the company’s CEO Tony Smurfit, operations director Stuart Gilder and regional director Andy Burrows gave presentations on the theme of ‘I Choose to Look the Other Way’.
Later in the week, staff at the company attended a seminar on simple fitness techniques, a risk perception exercise and a Safety Watch Observation Programme (SWOP). This latter event provided workers with some basic health and safety training, where safe acts in the workplace were identified and praised whilst the consequences of ‘at risk’ behaviours were discussed and explored.
On the last day of the health and safety awareness week, staff members were given a unique chance to see what it was like to work in a confined space. People who work in confined spaces every day have to undergo special health and safety training, due to the risks this work entails.
