Hart of Dixie 1x03: Gumbo and Glory

Original Air Date: 10 October 2011

Storyline: Zoe is determined to win Bluebell's gumbo contest and prove to everyone that she is a part of the community, which will hopefully help her land some patients. Lavon develops a crush on Zoe and Brick's new receptionist, Didi, but things get a little messy after Lemon catches wind of the news. Zoe and Brick find themselves having to work together to perform a life-saving surgery.Best Quote:

Wade: Here, snakey-snakey-snakey. Ah, the old Hooper house. I used to bring my high school girlfriends here.
Zoe: Please tell me they were still breathing at the time.

Review: As any new show, it takes a while before things fall into place and the actors find their way around the story. "Gumbo and Glory" proves that things are moving in the right direction. The cast is getting more used to the characters they portray and the plot lines are altogether smoother, so the only thing that's really bothering me at this point is the stubbornness of the costumes people, who insist to put Rachel Bilson in shorts despite having so many more choices for a woman coming from the city that gave us Carrie Bradshaw.

As Zoe tries to fit in despite having no friends besides the mayor and Wade, she signs up for the yearly gumbo contest, which is almost always won by Brick Breeland, making everyone question her cooking skills. The opportunities for fun scenes are countless, from Burt Reynolds eating the gumbo she had delivered from New York to a sweet moment between her and George as they reminisce about the best Big Apple restaurants.
There was a lot of growing when it came to Zoe and her relationship with Brick in this episode. They had to work together on a life-saving surgery that Zoe - having one hand injured - needed to guide Brick through only to see him take full credit afterwards. But throughout all this, Zoe learned something about herself as well: she's not beyond being too proud herself and sometimes she does act like coming from New York is the best thing in the world and nothing can top that. While she may be better than Brick at surgery, she still has to work on her bedside manners.
The speech she gave at the end of the contest, though, showed that she is willing to work on her issues and she may have won some hearts in the end, not just Wade's.
Because, as sure as I am about my name, Wade has the hots for the young doctor Hart. And as much as I want to warm myself toward George, as that is the romantic pairing that is being slowly pushed by the show, I'm a fan of Wade's for the moment. He's a bad boy with a soft side; he's hilarious, he can cook and he can carry a girl in his arms without breaking a sweat (speaking of which, we'll see him sweat in the next episode and he's just yummy!); how can she not see that behind his sarcasm and perfect smile? Also, anyone willing to put up with Lemon must be a tool, right? That woman has no good parts and I have a hard time believing that both George and Lavon can be in love with her.
One of the best parts about this episode was the bromance between Lavon and Wade. I don't get this new TV fashion of bromances, we seem to be invaded by them, but they make things funnier at least. It was hilarious seeing Wade giving advice to the mayor on how to woo Didi, especially the part where he impersonated the new assistant. Though I found it a little bit weird to see an ex-NFL player having trouble to talk to women, he was adorable and he grew on me, especially since he stopped talking about himself in the third person. So far, my favorite moments are when Zoe, Lavon and Wade get together. And after seeing the preview for next week, I'm a bit excited about the heat wave, but I also want to see what's really going on with the mayor and Lemon.
