The Film:
The Blair Witch Project needs very little introduction. It's a scary film about three film students who are making a documentary about the legendary Blair Witch.
What's it like:
For a start it's pretty darn scary. This is the kind of film that doesn't rely on special effects or big name actors. No, this film is all about atmosphere. The use of hand held cameras makes us feel like we are a part of the film and everything the characters experience, we experience too. The film draws us in slowly as Donahue interviews several people from the Blair Witch area. It's interesting how the legend of the Blair Witch comes together from the various stories told by the people. But then the scares come when the young film makers enter the forest.
This film doesn't achieve scares with scary monsters or ghosts, no, Blair Witch draws on genuine human fears. The group of film makers hear noises, see things out of the corner of their eye and get lost in the woods. The fear comes from the break down of the group as they begin to mistrust each other. Slowly we see various subtle hints to the existence of the Blair Witch, a strange random rock formation here and a pile of sticks there. That's the great thing about this film. It's all about tension. And there is no music in the film which helps to amp up the fear.Overall opinion:
The Blair Witch Project is a genuinely chilling film with a freaky ending. It works as it plays with the mind. When night descends the weirdness happens. We understand the fear of the students as they experience all the strange goings on in the forest. This film is well worth a watch. It makes a decent Halloween fright fest.
