My name is Navdeep Khera and I am currently studying for my foundation degree in Business & Management at Wakefield College. I was asked to undertake a unpaid work placement within a company and were given details of many companies around the Wakefield area. I decided to undertake the placement at GREEN Communications.
Green Communications is a public relations and marketing firm based in the heart of Wakefield city center. Before I arrived there I had no experience in PR or marketing, but it was a new challenge and it was interesting to see how marketing is applicable in every aspect of business.
GREEN Communications is a huge user of social media, such as blogs, Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and Pinterest, as a marketing tool. It uses Twitter as a media outlet for the companies its does PR for.
I grasped this quickly as I was assigned a project to build a database and find potential clients for GREEN through the Twitter links they had generated with companies across the UK. I identified 70 potential clients in the packaging sector in which GREEN Communications is a specialist. Also the project helped me develop my understanding of Microsoft Office and programmes like Excel, Word and Outlook with me using them on a daily basis.
Throughout the placement I was given many opportunities. I was asked to write a couple of press releases for GREEN’s clients in the packaging, education and training sectors. As a result I have developed skills in PR, which I never had I feel PR and marketing skills are useful in many aspects of business, and it will hopefully help me in my career path.
