Grimm 1x05: Danse Macabre

Original Air Date: 8 December 2011

StorylineNick and Hank's investigation of a dead high school teacher leads them to the school's outcast, Roddy Geiger. Nick realizes that there's more to Roddy than meets the eye and enlists Monroe's help to get through to the troubled teenager before he exacts revenge on the students who wronged him. Meanwhile, Nick learns that his presence is beginning to affect the creature world.TriviaThe episode's title comes from Camille Saint-Saëns' piece of music with the same name. It is also played by the musicians in the story.

On its premiere, this episode aired on a Thursday night outside of the show's regular Friday timeslot.

Best Quote:

Ephram: You cops?
Hank: We've been called worse.

The StoryThe Pied Piper of HamelinIntro: "Out they scampered from doors, windows, and gutters, rats of every size, all after the piper."Review: The Pied Piper was the inspiration for this Grimm episode, one that literally made my hair stand out on my arms because of my undying hate for rats. I could understand Hank's horror and sympathized with him and, as much as I admired Roddy's talent, there's no way I can find the Reinigen less disgusting. With all the rats and the mutilated body, I felt like I was watching a Bones episode, but without all the fun. Still, "Danse Macabre" was an enjoyable episode, one a bit more developed than "Lonelyhearts"

My feelings about the case stop here. It was obvious from the beginning who the guilty ones were and there was no real investigation, at least none that we were privy too. Also, the way Nick and Hank busted the Geigers was a big minus point towards their likability. I've never understood why policemen have to be so violent and Hank's enjoyment at keeping Ephram Geiger in jail for resisting arrest, when he didn't really even arrest him in the first place, just made me nauseous.
There wasn't any progress in revealing more about the mythology of the Grimms except that it is obvious that all creatures are afraid of them because of the stories they heard. Grimms have a reputation of wanting to kill all those fairy tale (sort of) creatures and it seems like Nick is the only one who doesn't conduct his life by the same set of rules. Maybe that's because he didn't have a proper initiation; nevertheless, it just seems odd to me that Grimms, who are supposedly on the side of good, would just kill any of these creatures without determining whether they are really a threat or not.
Either way, it looks like there's only a matter of time before someone finds out what Nick really is. The fridge incident left Juliette in awe of the fact that someone could be so afraid of her boyfriend and my bet is her next move will be to search aunt Marie's trailer - if she knows where Nick put it. Hank might also find out (he already noticed his partner's ability to "read" people and never be wrong about them), and his encounter with Adalind Schade was definitely not a coincidence. It may be that this is a little early in the season, especially with Grimm just being picked up for a full 22-episode season (congrats to them, this was the only one from my new shows that still needed to get a full season).
As I said before, this was overall an enjoyable hour, though there were a couple of things I didn't particularly like. One is Monroe's seemingly important role in advising Roddy, which unfortunately didn't come off just as great as I'd expected; the other was Sgt. Wu's preference for cheesy stupid lines.Grimm 1x04: Lonelyhearts Back to Season 1
