It’s difficult to understand where this obsession \ passion for  wallpapers comes from. Almost all of the choices have a tropical background. Mainly green and environmentally friendly.
The idea of covering parts of the wall is not a recent decorative strategy. The French boiserie is reserved for those who have enough space; the tapestries make us think about a luxurious and bohemian atmosphere; last but not least the most common paper on paper that was a must – have in the Seventies.

If we think about a high quality interior like the ones ofA Clockwork Orange’, the cruel cult films of Kubrick in 1971, we can see how this technique is capable of giving character and personality as much as a piece of furniture.

If I have to suggest a method to use it today in a contemporary way I would use these simple rules:
1. Do not use graphic effects or optical prints with a retro taste.
2. Never use it on more than one wall; leave the other three walls of the room colored in white. This is essential to create a focal and unique point of attention
3. Choose vegetative character and unique prints. From the incredible patterns designed by William Morris & Co. to the fashionable and contemporary prints with pineapples.
Believe me it’s not difficult to get involved and feel relaxed using bold and lush leaves alternate with minimal and sophisticated furnishings

If you want to read my very short guide on ‘the right wallpaper for each room’ go to wallpaper ready to decor or how to match an interior with style
