Glenmorangie 15 Years Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

This Glenmorangie 15 Years hails from the early 2000s. Back in ye olden days, when they had a regular/standard looking bottle, it was part of their core range, but unlike their current mode of operation, I don’t exactly know what “extra aging” means pre-LVMH.

Glenmorangie 15 Years Review

Today, almost everything Glenmo does starts out as The Original Glenmorangie 10 and then gets a 2+ year finishing and gets labeled as “extra matured”, but I don’t know if that was the case back then. I assume it would because the standard Glenmo was also 10 years back then, but they don’t give extra details, so your guess is as good as mine.

Was it aged for 10 years in ex-Bourbon and then spent 5 years in new charred oak? Was it 13 years in ex-B and 2 years in NCO? Was it only 6 months in NCO? Who knows, but maybe we can get some semblance of an idea once we dive in.

Let’s get to drinkin’.

Glenmorangie 15 Years Tasting Notes

EYE
Amber

NOSE
Roasted malt, honied graham, dried fruit, oak, roasted nuts, brown sugar, baking spice and touches of citrus peels and vanilla.

I love the aroma of this Glenmorangie 15 Years, I need a candle or something that smells like this.

PALATE
Roasted nuts, grilled fruit, manuka honey, dried orchard fruit, toffee, cinnamon heavy baking spice, oak, vanilla and a slight herbal note.

This is a richer, amped-up, version of the old 10 with a deeper oak profile.

FINISH
Long -> Dried orchard fruit, graham, honey and oak fade out to a graham cracker sweet char.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Great balance, full body and a slightly dry but soft feel.

Glenmorangie 15 Years – Overall Thoughts and Score

Dear Glenmorangie, please bring this whisky back. It’s warmly oaky, deeply fruity and elegantly spicy in a way that just doesn’t exist in the world of Scotch today. There is a Glenmorangie 15 Years shaped hole on our whisky shelves and only Dr. Bill has the power to fix that.

Seriously… this is awesome and the way it opens after a few minutes, and a few drops of water to speed things up, is incredible. This is the kind of dynamic whisky I’m looking for. The kind I want to sip on daily and would enjoy from now till I can no longer lift a glass. Bring it back Glenmo!

SCORE: 4/5 (good, definitely recommend ~ B+ | 87-89)
