The Gander Restaurant, 15 West 18th St in New York is a place rec'd and seconded by two trusted friends and since the first has been vilified on a prominent website, we suspended our expectations.  Well..... the place is cool, hipster-central, with an awesomely intriguing menu (in the Yankee sense.)  Much indecision; lamb chops to our left - beautiful but enough for all Putin's rebels.  What to do?

I ordered, enjoyed tremendously and shared with Colette the so-called creamed spinach side order, in fact, a precious offering of spinach with pecorino that could have stood alone as a "main," then Colette had a huge piece of branzino on a puree of celery root and lentils which was equally dazzling and I had one of the best dishes of tasty spaghetti with razor clams, bisque and crispy panko (I think) I've ever had.

Our bill - pause, the wines are staggeringly expensive for a Old New York Boy (1957-1985) who picks up good stuff at Cavavin for 6-8 E, but I found a wine by the glass for $10 which I negotiated for $40 a bottle and got out for a total of $114.32.

Go?  For sure, but don't give away my wine secret, eh?
