If you follow the Sweet Apple facebook page, you will probably notice that my friends and I are very loving. Not in that ‘looove you babes!’ (but I actually don’t really, I just like how it sounds when it rolls off my tongue) kind of way. In a way that is similar to family. We are soul sisters.
These girls are my number one fans. The first people to like or share anything I post and make comments. They are always in the background, chilled wine in hand, yelling my name like groupies at a rock concert.
When you are thinking about taking leaps with your future, it is scary. You are always battling that little voice inside your head saying ‘who the f$%k do you think you are?’ ‘Why would anyone want to read what you have to say?’
And these voices kill greatness. They rip courage at the seams.
So my advice to anyone who is entering riskier territory. To anyone who is planning on following their dreams. Anyone attempting that change of career, that new venture…
Recruit your teammates.
You are going to encounter rejection. Every influential person has had to feel the red-hot sting at some point. One of my favourite writers, Cheryl Strayed, detailed the numerous, and I mean numerous, rejection letters she received from publishers and magazines before she wrote her best selling book. It must have been excruciating.
This isn't just the case for writers, rejection will feature in almost every area of our lives. When gunning for all the good things life has to offer: love, connection, that dream job or internship…we are going to encounter situations where we don’t feel wanted. And all of our negative self-beliefs will be activated. These are the times when it is easy to just give up and walk away.
But that is when you need your posse.
I have a tight circle. Each one of these beautiful, strong and talented women wears an invisible flower crown that only I can see. They hold a bunch of sparklers, each one used to write my name on the air in an orange glow. They are my mob, but in cuter outfits. Ready to defend me at each and every step, even if it is against myself…my very worst enemy.
So each time that voice in my head says ‘you. can’t. do. this.’ There is a striking babe in a flower crown and six-inch heels, standing at the doorway of my mind, holding a bazooka.
‘Say hello to my little friend...’
Recruit your mobsters, and cherish them. They will become some of the most important people to ever enter, and never leave your life.
Much love XX
