Former Law Minister Iqbal Haider passes away
Former Law Minister and Human Rights Activist Iqbal Haider passed away in a local hospital in Karachi on Sunday at the age of 67.
He was suffering from lungs disease since long. His funeral prayer will be offered at Imambargah Yasrub in Defence Housing Society after Zuhar prayer on Monday.
Born on 14 January 1945, Iqbal Haider completed his graduation from Government Collage of Commerce and Economics and obtained his LLB degree from the Punjab University.
Later he went to read law in United Kingdom at the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn.
After returning to home he adopted law as profession and became a lawyer of Supreme Court in 1978. He was a leading figure in Movement for Restoration of Democracy (MRD) during General Zia ul Haq’s martial law regime and went behind the bars several times during the political struggle.
Later, he joined Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in 1988. He was considered as one of the closest associates of the former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
Iqbal Haider became a senator in 1991 and served as federal minister of law in 1993-1994. Later he also served as Attorney General of Pakistan.
However, he separated himself from PPP in 2005 and devoted his life for the human rights.
President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Muslim League-N president Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister and several local and foreign socio-political personalities have expressed their grief and sorrow over his death.
