The owner of a mini market in Littlehampton has been prosecuted and found guilty for breaking food hygiene laws.
Shopkeeper Suventhiny Kanapathipillai, the owner of the Wick Parade Mini Market in West Sussex, was prosecuted after environmental health officers found a number of food safety problems within her business.
As well as storing food products at the wrong temperature, inspectors also found food offered for sale that was beyond its use-by date. Both of these issues could have had serious implications for the health and safety of customers, and both could have been avoided had the shopkeeper and her staff had better food hygiene training.
Miss Kanapathipillai will be sentenced in June after being found guilty at Worthing Magistrates’ Court of two breaches of the Food Hygiene (England) Regulations 2006.
Commenting on the outcome of the case, the Arun Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, Councillor Dendle, said:
“Food businesses must have systems in place to ensure that the food they sell is safe.
“Environmental Health provides guidance to food businesses but where this is ignored, we have to take formal enforcement action as in this case.”
