Even though, Pariah originally made its début during the Sundance Film Festival in January, Focus Features has admitted that the late theatrical release in December means that the critically acclaimed film is trying to line itself up for Oscar contention.

Will this independent movie make a name for the director, Dee Rees and star, Adepero Oduye? Hopefully so, if the movie builds upon what the previews have shown – the Academy is in for a pleasant surprise.

At the same time, with The Help making a huge splash critically and commercially – Pariah will have some stiff competition. However, who knows what may tickle the Academy this year. After all, these are the same folks that awarded both Eminem and Three 6 Mafia a gold statue – so really, anything is possible.

Are you looking forward to the 2012 Oscars?
