Flats Challenge: Day 1

By Craftycrunchymama
I am taking part in the Second Annual Flats and Handwashing Challenge hosted by Dirty Diaper Laundry.  For 7 days I will be using only flat cloth diapers and handwashing them in an effort to prove that cloth diapering can be affordable and accessible to all.  You can learn more about the rules and why this challenge was started by visiting the announcement post.  This year there are over 450 participants from all over the world!
I have been back and forth about whether or not I am going to do the flats challenge at all. We are having a serious family crisis and time is not on our side right now. I have decided to continue with the flats challenge but my posts on the topic will be short and to the point. I want to share my experience with you all, but my family is in a state of needing me right now so I have to find that balance. So here goes!
I hope to learn how to use flat diapers better during this challenge as well as raise awareness that cloth diapers can be cheap and easy to use! (I mean, all of those cute printed diapers that cost $25 a piece...are they REALLY neccesary?) There are so many low income families that could benefit from learning how to use flats so that they don't have to wash and reuse disposables. (Yes, this is really happening!).
So far, I have been pad folding the flat into a cover. It has been the easiest to deal with and works well. I find that I am having to adjust the rise on the cover because the flat is so trim. I have had a small amount of leaking, but I think adjusting the cover will help this. Overnight, I used a pad folded flat inside of a pocket diaper. It worked GREAT - better than the microfiber insert provided with it! I woke up next to a completely dry baby and was shocked!
Thanks for following me along on this journey.
