FLASH GORDON #1 (2014) from Dynamite Review

FLASH! AH AHHH! Savior of the Universe! I remember that theme from Queen so distinctively.  Heeeeee’s back! Flash Gordon #1 from Dynamite is here.

I saw this title pop up and I got a little intrigued to check it out.  I remember the character from the TV show a bit but remembered the Queen song more.  The movie Ted didn’t help much with my thoughts of Flash Gordon but when I saw Jeff Parker as the writer on the book, I knew I needed to check it out.  The book starts off as a FLASHback (pun intended) to 1 year ago.  We get a brief into to the 3 main characters Dale Arden, Dr. Zarkov and Alex “Flash” Gordon.  We then jump forward to today with the three of them in a futuristic chase in jets.  After some portal jumping to different planets trying to outrun their enemies, they end up on the planet of Arboria which is what looks like just made up of huge trees.  When a creature of the planet was about to reach the crew, the Arborians stepped in.  If it wasn’t for the quick thinking of Dale, who knows what would happen to Flash and his crew but we will have to wait and see anyway.

While we saw a bit arrogance from Flash while flying around is his jet, we didn’t get a lot of action from him.  This book just scratches the surface of what I believe can be a very entertaining series.  I am a fan of Jeff Parker’s writing that he has done with Batman ’66 so I have high hopes and will continue reading.  The art from Evan “Doc” Shaner in conjunction with Jordie Bellaire’s colors, it makes for a classic look for a classic character. I will have to wait to see if Flash will save with a mighty hand, Every man, every woman, Every child but for now we will take it one book at a time.
