Timberland

These sturdy utility boots were quite popular in the 1990s, when men wore them with oversized denim and bubble jackets or vests. These days, you can wear a modern version of this look with dark-wash jeans and a loose-fitting sweater. Timberlands were most commonly sold in a tan color, but you can also find the boots in shades of black or gray.

Flannel Shirts Around the Waist

The laid-back rocker look of the 1980s and the grunge movement of the 1990s included the plaid-patterned button-down shirt made of flannel and tied around the waist. Men often wore the flannel shirt with a plain white t-shirt and distressed jeans, along with motorcycle or cowboy boots. This look is fashionable again; a pair of slightly faded jeans, a well-fitted t-shirt and distressed leather boots are essential for pulling this look off today.

Rolled-Up Jeans

When you look at 1980s sitcoms like Saved by the Bell or Charles in Charge, you’ll notice that most of the guys are wearing acid or light-wash jeans that are rolled tightly at the cuff to show off their slouch socks and high-top sneakers. You can replicate the look with jeans in any wash, but give it a modern twist by keeping the cuff loose to show off colorful socks and dressing up the top of your outfit with a v-neck sweater over a plaid button-down for a geek chic look.

Patches

Varsity sweaters and jackets that were popular during the 1950s featured patches that showcased a young man’s sport of expertise and the school he attended. Patches were also popular in the 1980s, as guys often wore them on their leather and denim jackets. If you’re inspired by this look, check out the items available on the PatchSuperstore website. Choose the patches that you want and take the patches, along with a jacket, to the tailor of your choice to have the patches added to the sleeves and front of your fashion accessory. A pair of relaxed jeans and combat boots can complete the look.

T-Shirt and Blazer

The blazer with a fitted T-shirt underneath was the standard “going to the club to meet girls” outfit for men in the late 1980s and into the early 2000s. The blazers were usually in eye-catching colors like purple and cobalt blue, but you can keep the look modern with blazer in a neutral color, or a blazer in plaid print. A V-neck fitted t-shirt, as opposed to the round-neck ones that were popular in years past, may be a better choice.
