Five Changes That Prepare Your Home for Aging in Place

By Homesmsp @HomesMSP

MP900309101 Baby boomers I work with are thinking ahead when they buy... making plans not only for right now, but also for aging in place. One-level living is probably the biggest feature that enables you to age in place. If it isn't existing in your current or future home, look at adapting it to create a no-step entry into the home with bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and laundry all on one level.

Here are five other changes that can prepare your home for aging in place... some of them very simple.

  1. 36" doorways with offset hinges - make doorways wide enough to accommodate walkers and wheelchairs
  2. Hand-held shower heads and bathroom grab bars - these are some of the least expensive changes you can make
  3. Walk-in shower stall, or convert tub to shower - stepping into a tub for a shower can be hazardous, you can even convert an existing tub into a walk-in shower if you don't have one
  4. Lever handles on doors and faucets - a simple lever handle eliminates struggles with doorknobs and faucets
  5. Higher toilets - make it easier to both sit down and stand up
