Fighting Resistance

By Melissa Boles @_mboles

I’m going to tell you a (not-so-secret) secret.

I struggle with Resistance.

Resistance, according to Steven Pressfield, is the enemy inside of me.  This is a simple version of what Resistance is, because Resistance is every bad thought you’ve had about your writing or your ideas, and every single thing that stops you from accomplishing your dream.  It’s a terrible thing.

The thing about Resistance is that it allows you to procrastinate.  It allows you to give up.  It allows you to blame your inability to start, finish, or do something on outside influences, even though deep down you know it’s you.

I often do things like say that I’m not at my best unless I’m busy.  Or I just put it off until later because I’d rather relax.  “I need it,” I tell myself, “and I can always do that tomorrow.”

And then I never do it.

I have ideas and dreams, and things I want to see accomplished.  And yet they just sit in my head as dreams and ideas, and they don’t go anywhere.

So how do I fix this?

Well, I don’t know.  Maybe you do.  Maybe you’re really good at fighting Resistance.  If so, can you tell me your secrets?

I guess the thing I’m trying to say is that I’m not perfect.  I don’t always get the things accomplished that I should get accomplished.  But I still love the ideas that I come up with and I still believe that I will one day accomplish those things.  I just have to figure out what that looks like.

And so, if you’re where I’m at, I hope you’re able to start fighting Resistance.  Don’t worry, I’ll share things as I figure them out.  But more than that, more than all of that, I hope you’re able to continue loving yourself even when you struggle to fight Resistance.

Because Resistance will not be around forever.  It is only temporary.
