February ’15 In Recap

Posted on the 28 February 2015 by Ikzidna @InspiredGround

Oh, February. Known for love season, birthday and surely awards season. I was pumped to the award season in January, watching Golden Globes and People’s Choice Award. But February was pretty full month. This month I managed to see a little bit of Grammy and BAFTA (first time). Also saw Oscars live (not the delay and just from live tweets), doing real live tweets. Don’t forget the red carpets and some Fashion Police episodes :D Amazing.

In between, I’m doing housework (cause I am a full time house wife) and started doing freelance job. So, half of the month I was preoccupied and adapted with this new routine. I was in between exhaustion and on fire. But, I’m glad I’m doing new things. I’m glad I managed to do some great features, like Memorable Movie Moments : Red, Top 10 Favorite ’90s Soundtrack, Top 5 Movies About Time and Top 10 Favorite 2014 Performance. Reviewed Wild (2014) too, and posted my thoughts on Oscars 2015 just several hours from the live show.

February ’15 In Recap

The most expensive movie I watched in February (or ever) was Foxcatcher (2014). It was screened in an exclusive Cinemaxx theater, with price 3 times higher. The cinema have fewer seats, with lazy comfortable chairs, automatic service buttons and blankets. It was cozy to the max. Movies like Foxcatcher maybe not aimed to popular audiences,  but rather to serious film lovers, so I can understand the prices. I appreciated the effort to bring new experience and bringing the not-so-popular movies to watch in the cinema.

And, I also love that Inspired Ground’s twitter followers have reached 500 people! Oh, wow! That’s a big number for me.

Well enough telling stories, and get real with the mini movie reviews, shall we :

The Double Life of Veronique (1991)

Foxcatcher (2014)

Seeing Steve Carell totally out of his comfort zone as a comedian was awesome. I think if his character have a positive influence, he could win the Best Actor (well, maybe it’s hard against Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking) but still it’s his first big nomination in a movie and leading role. I loved Mark Ruffalo as the big brother, I even include him in my top 10 favorite 2014 performance. But aside that, Foxcatcher seem bland and half bitter in the end. It’s probably felt empty because Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) have a quiet and closeted person in real life, but it’s a field they should dig more I think. Score : 7

Laggies (2014)
 photo laggies_zpsbzymltwd.jpg

You know, with this movie, Begin Again and The Imitation Game, that’s 3 movies of Keira Knightley in 2014. And she’s pregnant now. How can a woman be so productive? She must’ve enjoy every bit of her work and happy, she didn’t care. Anyway, Laggies felt very light and a typical feel good movie, but I admit it has some true life lessons. Especially about taking charge and picking people to be in your life. But I didn’t like how Keira’s character that seem too easygoing with the teens that she seemed almost have no adult characteristics. It’s a nice movie. Score : 7,5

Pretty in Pink (1986)

It’s an interesting and great movie for teens, though the ending was cliche. I loved Molly Ringwald’s strong character, suits her best. And I loved her fashion choices. It automatically be my next movie choice for Fashion from Movies feature. Score : 7,5

The Imitation Game (2014)
 photo imitation game_zpsd4sinuyt.jpg

It started strong and interesting, about a smart and stubborn man who believes he can crack the enigma code. They have interesting team members, with heart-breaker Matthew Goode (unfortunately, not used well) and Keira Knightley (an interesting and refreshing member of the team who used to be all men). Cumberbatch was great, not to be surprised. But ended quite weak. It’s not about the fact that Alan Turing was treated unequal because of his sex orientation, but about his inventions adventure just being credited from the ending texts. So, all the inventions were only meant to tell his unpleasant private life? Score : 6

The Theory of Everything (2014)

Beautiful story from Jane Hawking’s side. I felt terribly sympathetic to her for raising 3 children and taking care of Stephen Hawking alone, and didn’t surprised with her choices in the end. I loved the music score, Felicity Jones graceful and loyalty as a wife, and how the movie explain their story. Eddie Redmayne surely earned his Oscar, well deserved, after acting crippled yet humorous and charming. It’s not a perfect love story, but it was one great life phase. Score : 8

-
Still Alice (2014)
 photo Still-Alice-2_zpsatcc9wqw.jpg

Still Alice can create such horror that you don’t have to reach an elderly age to suffer Alzheimer. What makes it worse, it happened to a very active and smart woman like Alice (Julianne Moore), a college professor as well. I admire her positivity to keep herself informed with the information she will forget, it showed her fight and battle despite her condition is not getting better. I loved how Alice is as a mother and wife, and her understanding to her daughter’s life choices. I loved her relationship with Lydia (Kristen Stewart), her youngest daughter. I loved how the ending chose to be not as depressing as it could have been. It’s a great character, despite how to me it’s not the strongest from all other Oscar nominees for Best Actress. Score : 7

Barefoot (2014)

barefoot
Barefoot seemed like modern age of Romeo and Juliet. Not the case of having their families hated each other, but more of ‘Us versus The World’ type. It’s refreshing to see Evan Rachel Wood being an innocent sweet woman (rather than a gothic and intimidating one), next to the hunky good man, Scott Speedman. I loved the concept, and if it could be more dramatic, it would be one great romance movie. But it’s not and it’s a little predictable, though have a sweet story. Score : 6,5

-

Oldboy (2013)
 photo oldboy-2013_zpsokumdafj.jpg

I didn’t plan to watch the original Oldboy (2003) last month and didn’t plan to watch the 2013 version either. It’s proven almost everytime : there’s nothing better than the original. The adapted story is a little kinder than the original, and it automatically made the movie have lesser bite than it is. Score : 6

Best of The Month :

  • The Theory of Everything (2014)
  • Laggies (2014)
  • Pretty in Pink (1986)

******

There you go. Goodbye, February. See you next year. Readers, how’s your February?
