Family Re-union 2014

Posted on the 04 March 2014 by Tasneem Rajkotwala @tasu0704

While I was in India last year to celebrate my son’s birthday, I was also there to attend a much awaited wedding of my cousin. My mom side family is huge – all scattered in different parts of World but most of them still based in South India. Indian weddings are BIG – some even stretch to 10 days depending on the number of functions we choose to keep and there are so many people to witness the culmination of marriage, it make the weddings even more grand. I have lived with my grand-mother, aunts, uncles and most of my cousins in the same house in Hyderabad (a city in India) when I was between 5 and 12 years of age. We have been so close to each other through those years, played together at all times we hardly made any friends out of our family circle.

It had been almost 10 years now since we had met everyone as a one big  family. This upcoming wedding was our best chance to get together and remember the good times we have had in our childhood. Moreover so because most of us now were married with children in tow, we wanted our husbands and children to know their extended families. We’d regularly chat on how excited we were to meet each other or what clothes we would wear for different occasions.

Posing as one BIG FAT INDIAN FAMILY!

When we finally met in Bangalore, we were like house on fire. Apart from attending functions, enjoying our time all decked up in Indian clothes and accessories, posing for photographs, running after children, we’d gather in a small room at night to chat along, play games and pull each others’ legs which would go till 3 in the morning. We were so glued to one another, we would have breakfast, lunch and dinner together and still had loads to talk about!

Sometimes we get so busy with our lives, it becomes very important to connect with people we have grown up with – not virtually but physically, because it makes so much difference. I am very proud of my roots and the place where I come from. I am proud to call these people my family in a same way I am proud of my friends.
