This weekend, I had the excellent fortune of having a (literal) front-row seat to the Million Dollar Makeover event, brought to us by Macy’s and style guru and star of ABC’s The Chew and TLC’s What Not to Wear, Clinton Kelly.
With Clinton’s star power, it is nearly unnecessary for me to mention that the event, which took place at Providence Place Mall in Providence, Rhode Island, was sold out, with a waiting list, and an auxiliary crowd gathered amongst the racks. Estée Lauder also provided mini-makeovers to guests as part of the event. The excitement was palpable as Clinton was introduced to hundreds of knowledge-thirsty disciples, seeking wisdom only he could so sassily and effortlessly impart.
And, let me tell you, Clinton laid it down. Small feet? Short torso? Large rear end? Clinton delivered his fashion fixes with unparalleled wit and humor. He tackled dressing appropriately for one’s age and body type with the ease only showcased by a seasoned expert. The crowd was then treated to a fall fashion show for all body types, highlighting ensembles for work, play, and holiday, currently offered at Macy’s.
I learned several very useful fashion tidbits (I need some, having basically been at home in pajamas for the past two years), namely that, I, too, can wear a pencil skirt. Can you believe it? I actually still can’t. I probably won’t, but I could if I wanted to, and that’s all that matters. The fashion show was filled with colors, textures, and great shoes. A few tips? Don’t wear leggings as pants (Amen!), if you’re short, colored tights will not help your cause, wearing the same-colored bottoms and shoes will elongate the leg (this 5’2″ girl thanks you!), and if you’ve approached, ahem, a certain age, let’s keep the girls inside, shall we? Of trends, he says, and I quote, “You don’t want to be a head-to-toe trend ho.” Ah. Like Yoda, just much better dressed.
Two of the highlights for me? A simply adorable Tommy Hilfiger ensemble, perfectly completed by knee-high riding boots I can only dream about pulling off, and a gorgeous, glitzy holiday ensemble I’m trying to find somewhere to wear (Have I mentioned my love of shiny things?).
Overall, time extremely well spent. There were a lot of laughs, tons of tips, and a very special look into Macy’s fall fashions. And they couldn’t have been conveyed more dynamically than by the incomparable Clinton Kelly.
His parting words? “Never, ever, EVER, use the word ‘hate’ about your own body…Don’t hate on the vessel.”
I knew I loved this guy for a reason…
