I lived in the UK for six years and I discovered that those wacky and sometimes extravagant hair accessories worn by British women at parties, during Christmas, at Ascot and for New Year's were called fascinators.
Thanks to the Royal Wedding, they were EVERYWHERE and it was only then that I found out what they were called, especially when Samantha Cameron, the Prime Minister's wife didn't wear one to the wedding and the media made a MASSIVE deal out of it. That's when I became fascinated by fascinators.
After receiving a beige Dorfman Pacific Scala Fascinator I began looking around here in the US and realized they are not that popular. In fact, when I put out a request to blogger friends to send in their pictures wearing fascinators it was no surprise the two responses I had were from British friends.
If you are still not sure what a fascinator is, it is a hair accessory that comes in a variety of styles, colors, shapes and even heights! First example, Kate Middle wearing a variety of fascinators for different occasions.

US celebrities were harder to come by - even the likes of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry who I thought would have surely rocked this look haven't been wearing them, but I did manage to find a few and only one was British...so there you go!

Sarah Jessica Parker :: Christina Aguilera :: Dita Von Teese :: Eva Mendes :: Victoria Beckham
These hair accessories are worn for special occasions, especially for weddings.
Here you can see two of my lovely blogger friends Roz and Alex adding the final touches to their wedding attires and wearing stand out fascinators.
Bloggers wear fascinators too!

As for me, I never wore one in the UK, but I've been playing around with the Dorfman Pacific beige fascinator that was sent to me. This year, the Mr. and I are staying in for New Year's Eve and having a fancy dinner with friends and dressing up for it.
What better time to wear my fascinator and draw in the New Year in style.

And if you are really up for a challenge, why not try to make your own fascinator at home?
My friend Deb at Real Girl Runway made one extravagant hair accessory for her cousin AND it won her a prize!

So what do you think? I personally wouldn't mind seeing more US ladies rocking these hair accessories. My mother thinks they are hideous, but I suppose there is something for all ages and tastes?
Either way, I hope you all have a FABULOUS New Year!
