Explorers on Witch Mountain by Alex Ball

Posted on the 28 March 2022 by Booksocial

It’s been awhile but the book club is back and exploring a witch mountain

Witch Mountain – the blurb

Stella Starflake Pearl is eagerly anticipating her next expedition. Suddenly disaster strikes when Stella’s father, Felix, is snatched by a fearsome witch. Stella must bring her magic ice princess tiara to Witch Mountain or she will never see Felix again! But no one ever returns from Witch Mountain . . .

Stella, Ethan, Shay, Beanie and reluctant Jungle Cat explorer, Gideon, set off into the unknown. They will face chomping pumpkin patches, vampire trolls, poisonous rabbits, outraged vultures and deranged broomsticks in their quest to rescue Felix.

Second time around

Witch Mountain is the second book in the Polar Bear Explorers’ Club series and pretty much takes up where the first one let off. The same characters are back but with fabulous new ones such as the jungle fairies and their chant of doom. Witch Mountain is the perfect setting for adventure and the overall story arc does move forward, slightly.

I didn’t quite enjoy it as much as the first outing. There was a character or two too many for me and the humor didn’t quite as much punch as in Polar Bear but it’s a fantastically exciting tale full of imagination and tees up perfectly for the third in the series – Black Ice Bridge.

Book club questions

+++ These questions contain spoilers and should only be used if you have read the book already!+++

  • “The only way we ever fail is if we stop trying” This was the advice Felix gave to Stella, is he right?
  • There are a LOT of characters in the book. Did the author manage to make them all different and clear in your mind or did you struggle to remember who was who?
  • How amazing does the ice cream house sound near the end of the book? If you could have a house made out of food what would it contain? Think window boxes filled with banana ice-cream sunflowers and chocolate flake windowsills!
  • The Witch Mountain contains lots of places such as the Forest of Enchanted Broomsticks and Iced Spiced Gingerbread Street. Based on Stella’s adventures in the book can you draw a map of the mountain?
  • What would be in your magic fort blanket?
