Essentials For Toddler Safety!

By Ourbabyblog @OurBabyBlogx
Gone are the days when you could lay your little one on their playmat so you could quickly make yourself a cup of tea or have a nice bath whilst they happily play next to you, now you turn your back for a few moments and they're no-where to be seen...or you've managed to get them distracted so you can run to the loo for 2 minutes, only to hear a crash, bang, wallop as soon as you sit down, somehow they've managed to pull over the DVD holder and act like it's your fault for emptying your bladder..it's one big guilt trip eh!

So if your precious bundle is finding their feet or even just beginning to crawl, it's never too early to childproof your home and make it safer for them, I have put together some things below to get you started, i'll be honest and say I didn't realize there was so much stuff that needed to be 'proofed', finding Abbie in the kitchen cupboard was a surprise to us...who knew such fun could come from those!?

Essentials For Toddler Safety!

Baby Gates

Probably the most obvious one, perfect for keeping them out of certain rooms and adventuring up the stairs... you will probably need one for the bottom of the stairs, top and maybe for the kitchen too, Abbie loves being in the kitchen and helping me cook so I don't mind too much, but when it comes to doing the washing up and tidying, she tends to hang on to my legs and gets in the way...why not give them some saucepans and bits to keep them occupied whilst you get the kitchen sorted?

Bed Rails/Guards

We have one of these on our bed as we co-sleep with Abbie, she's such a fidget bum in the night, and by fidget I mean she actually sits up and crawls, I'm a light sleeper so always wake up anyway but we have the bed rail up to make sure she doesn't roll off the bed or crawl off it either! They are also fab for moving your LO over to their toddler bed, especially if they've been used to sleeping in the cot and suddenly there's no side there to protect them, just attach the rail and tra-la, complete safety and peace of mind for you both! We will be bringing Abbie's little bed into our room soon so she can get used to sleeping in her own space, I have a whole seperate post coming up soon on our cosleeping so keep checking back :)

Child-proof locks

If you're like Abbie, and love anything that makes a bang, for example, toddling off into the kitchen and opening every single cupboard you can reach and then closing them, opening them, closing them again...etc etc! I know it makes a fun sound but the neighbours won't appreciate it and neither does mummys ear drums! There are so many locks out there, I don't recommend spending loads of money, the cheaper ones are just as good as the pricier ones, they all do they same job after all! They stop them from opening drawers, cupboards, the fridge and even the oven! Making sure they can't get their little fingers trapped!

Socket covers

This is probably my worst fear as a parent, having Abbie put her fingers in an open socket...ahhh! Luckily there is an affordable way to prevent such things happening, they are literally little plastic plugs that cover the socket, preventing them from being touched and also they are made specially so that little fingers can't take them out too, perfect! Abbie recently went through a stage of pressing the on/off switches on the plugs which scared me too death, we tried teaching her 'no' but she didn't seem to understand........selective hearing I think! We got ours from Homebase for something silly like £1.99, so nice and cheap too :)

Don't worry about being 'too paranoid' you can never be too safe when it comes to kids, and it's always better to be safe than sorry!
