Essential Mobile Apps for Every Marketer

As your customers increasingly use mobile devices to research products, compare businesses, and make actual purchases, it becomes incumbent for us as marketers to familiarize ourselves with the top mobile apps. The better we understand the social tools our customers are using, the more effectively we can integrate these channels into our marketing mix.

Below are some essential applications every marketer should consider as part of any integrated marketing effort, plus a couple new additions worth checking out. For a comprehensive list of mobile tools for marketers, check out the Smart Insights list compiled by Iman Farooq.

Facebook — Still the proverbial 800-pound gorilla of social media, Facebook now has over one billion active users (at last count). Facebook allows marketers to deliver highly targeted messages to specific audiences.

Twitter If you can write a compelling headline in less than 140 characters, you could find new customers on Twitter. Twitter allows your message to be broadcast simultaneously on other channels as well, and has become an effective tool for dealing with customer service issues, correcting factual errors, and crisis management.

YouTube It’s both the second largest search engine and a place to store your videos, all in one place. When YouTube videos get shared enough, the number of views can even surpass TV audiences.

LinkedIn — Considered the social network for business professionals, a lot of recruiters and personnel departments use LinkedIn network to find new hires. Companies can also set up a page to promote their business and product line, offer whitepapers, and post career opportunities. LinkedIn is also a platform to share and post your own content. The LinkedIn app helps you stay up to date with connections and search for fellow users, companies and groups.

Meerkat and Periscope — These two new free apps, both launched in March, allow live video to be tweeted from your smartphone. The apps can broadcast live to your Twitter followers and friends you’ve added. (Both  are currently for iOS only.) Periscope is from Twitter and offers slightly more robust features, but both allow viewers to comment on streaming video and see how many people are viewing. Periscope also became the first mobile app to reach 1 million users in its first 10 days, so keep an eye out for it!
