Essential Exercises for Kids suffering from Cerebral Palsy

An overview: Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy or Spastics is a situation where in a child or a baby suffers from permanent or non progressing movement which leads to physical disability in growth and development. The brain of the baby or child gets affected because of which the physical growth hinders from happening. This is one of the most difficult and harsh situation for a child or a baby. Cerebral Palsy can occur either in the womb, or while taking birth or before the time the child reaches the age of three years. Cerebral is referred to cerebrum while Palsy is referred to Paralysis. However, there is no cure for such problem, yet there are techniques and therapies which can help a Spastic Kid in keeping himself or herself active.

 Essential Activities for Spastic Kids:

Thought the life of a Spastic kid is not as a normal kid, yet one can follow ways in which the spastic kids do not feel left out. It is very important to follow specific therapies and exercises for keeping the spastic kids healthy and active. The brain needs to get active signals in order to keep the child active.

The following are the activities that need to be done for spastic kids:

1) Exercise- Exercise is the foremost requisite for spastic kids. The following are the exercises:

  • Range of motion and Stretching Exercise: These exercises will keep the joints of the child active and maintained. Also, it will increase the motion of joints as well.
  • Motion Stretching Exercise: These exercises will activate the muscles along with joint movement. It helps in increasing the strength of the body.
  • Non motion Stretching Exercise: These exercises will activate the muscles without the movement of Joints.
  • Hold things or perform activities in suggested position: This will help the child in maintaining the work postures and positions.
  • Perform actions and movements for enhancing body control: This will help the child in improvising upon balancing and body control.

Apart from these exercises there are other therapies as well.

2) Acupuncture-Acupuncture is a Chinese therapy which involves the usage of needles in its treatment. It relieves the patient from unbearable pain and inflammation. Children do suffer from pain. Acupuncture is performed for headache, Neck pain, Joint pain and Back pain. It is said to be an alternative for the pain killer medicines that are suggested by doctors.

 3) Physiotherapy-Physiotherapy is a therapy that is given to the patient by pressing specific points and joint areas. It activates the joints and enables easy movement to children. The therapy can be performed any time post diagnosis.

4) Respiratory Therapy-Respiratory Therapy is a method by which the child can easily eat, breathe, drink, sleep, move physically and maintain respiratory functioning. It prevents cerebral palsy from creating its adverse impact on other functioning as well.

 5) Aqua Therapy-Water is found to be a soothing element for spastic kids. Spastic children are given aqua therapy only under an expert guidance only. Experts make the children perform anaerobic and aerobic exercises which soothes the joints and body parts of children.
