East West Engagement Rings

By Raymondleejewelers @raymondleejwlrs

Let’s talk about East West engagement rings! This style of engagement ring refers to how the center stone is set. Instead of vertically, an elongated fancy shape diamond – think oval, emerald cut, marquise, radiant, pear shape etc. – is set horizontally. You most commonly see this style with symmetrical elongated shapes, but I included pear shaped because I’ve seen some really cool bezel set East West engagement rings by Catbird floating around on Pinterest, and it’s a great style for brides who want something totally unexpected.

Fancy shapes, I’m not sure if I’ve written about here (though I have written about on the RLJ blog), are any diamond shape that isn’t round. I didn’t include princess cut or cushion cuts in the list above because they’re usually symmetrical/ square and thus it wouldn’t matter if they’re East West North or South because not you nor I nor Laurence Graff himself could tell the difference. Anyway, fancy shapes are a beautiful way to make your engagement ring stand out, and an East West setting just takes it totally to the next level.

I’ve got some eye candy to show off, obv. But first let’s chat about what you need to know about this style.

  • The prong placement will depend on your specific shape of center stone, but they’ll usually be in the same place they would be on a vertical setting. So a marquise will have them at the points, an emerald cut will have them at each corner, etc. You can always opt for a 6 prong East West setting, but I’ll love you more if you choose 4 prongs or bezel set (just trust me.)
  • This may seem like an edgy new trend, but our great grannies were doing it first (yep, just like the halo.) Vintage East West engagement rings abound – ditto for antique and yes they’re two different things, remember! Look to estate engagement rings first to find gorgeous rose cut East West settings, lots of marquise action, and Art Deco details.
  • The metal option is your call completely, yellow, rose and white metal all look fabulous.
  • You’ll find a huge range in styles for East West settings, whether you want glam micropave, funky matte gold, shared prong split shanks, or floral details. This look is so easy to make even more unique.
  • We can create this look on just about any setting, especially single banded engagement rings and solitaires. It’s super easy for our jewelers to set your stone sideways! One of the brands we carry makes this particular style in ready-to-wear form, so we’ll see those below.
