What surprised me the most during my first encounter with Dubai was the amazing space and size of the buildings there. Everywhere I looked I saw skyscrapers rising high up. Sometimes I was dizzy with this pomp and grandeur.
(Architectural) miracles do happen
When I visited Dubai, I was delighted with the genius of architects who created these amazing buildings with their shape and size. Number one for me was the "soaring" Burj Khalifa , climbing into the sky to a height of 828 meters. The skyscraper can be seen from a distance of up to 95 kilometers. It is not surprising that when I tried to grasp its entire size, it turned out that it was only the camera located on the ground that embraced the whole object in the frame. Burj Khalifa is currently the tallest building in the world, although the city authorities will not stop there. As I found out, another giant skyscraper, Dubai Creek Harbor, is now being built, 100 meters higher than the current record holder. It does not surprise me at all, because, as I managed to convince myself, nothing is impossible for this city.
When we talk about "miracles", I must also mention the Palm Islands . There are currently two of them and a third under construction. All together they are called the "eighth wonder of the world". I had the opportunity to see one of them, Palma Jumeirah, which consists of several specific "leaves" and "trunk" connecting it to the mainland. Shopping centers, water parks and several hundred luxury hotels have been created on this impressive island. Probably the most characteristic is the Atlantis the Palm hotel, in my opinion a little overrated. Of course, its shape and huge aquarium inside the complex are impressive, but after such sensational opinions I expected something better. At least the location on "Palemka" does not disappoint.
Burj al Arab is also great in Dubai, which is a peculiar showcase of Dubai. Almost everyone who comes here takes a souvenir photo with the famous hotel in the shape of a boat in the background (I also belong to this group). Although I was not surprised by the appearance of this building itself, but the fact that it houses apartments, the smallest of which has (modest) 169 m 2 , and the largest 780 m 2 ! Of course, each room has its own elevator, cinema, bathroom with jacuzzi and a panoramic view of Dubai. Unfortunately, I could not see the interior of the hotel and its exclusive rooms, because I could not afford it. The cheapest of the apartments costs approx. 3 thousand USD per night, i.e. over 11 thousand PLN, and the most expensive five times more. Well, who will prohibit the rich ...
The head is out of the ordinary, that is Dubai's everyday life
I have heard many times that Dubai can see a lot of super-expensive, abandoned cars. I could not believe it, because who would like to get rid of a luxury car? It turned out that I was wrong. In one of the parking lots near the airport I saw an almost completely gray (from dust!) Car, definitely worth a lot. "Where do these abandoned cars come from in the Emirates," I finally asked a guide who had lived there for many years. It turned out that all these unwanted cars were once bought on credit. When their owners (mainly foreigners) could no longer afford to pay the debt, they abandoned their "expensive toys" and fled the country. Why? This is a very strict law. In the United Arab Emirates, unpaid credit is a crime that you go to jail for.
What else could I not think? Possibility of skiing in a city where summer temperatures exceed 40 ° C. Of course, I mean Ski Dubai , which is a well-prepared ski resort with five ski runs, snow park or ice cave. The building from the outside does not look inviting, but the interiors are impressive - remember that we are in one of the hottest countries in the world! Skiing in the middle of summer? Such things must be in Dubai.
A real dizziness caused me to walk around the Gold Bazaar stretching in the old district of Dubai, called Dejra. They are simply narrow streets filled with jewelry stores and beaters encouraging shopping. There are supposedly 10 tons of gold on the entire bazaar. Chains, rings, pendants, earrings, bracelets - to choose, to color. For the wealthiest, there are so huge gold necklaces that somehow I find it hard to believe that anyone would be able to bear their weight. But their glare can certainly attract, though rather ... blinded me. Apparently, luxury and overwhelming wealth are not for everyone. Certainly not for me.
