So who polices the police in the Dreamscape? Joe and Kate do in this chapter. The main premise in this book is that a cop is being accused of harming or compromising the safe passage of a dreamer. That is a big no-no in the Dreamscape. Joe and Kate need to investigate and figure out whether or not he committed the crime within 24 hours or he goes off and gets banished to a land of unlimited darkness. During all of this, Joe talks to Kate (or as he calls her “Katie”) about his “dreams” he is having about his old parent Frank. Both are unaware who Frank is but it seems very vivid to Joe.
J.Michael Straczynski is doing something interesting in the book for me. He is mixing in a cop/detective story with a fun fantasy like twist. I like Joe’s attitude in the story. He has a bit of a harsh humor but it works with the cop persona. The way that Straczynski is turning parts of a dream into an almost real like world is amazing. And just like in the real world, those people that do their parts of society get fed up and mess things up for everyone else. I wonder if we’ll see what happens to anyone on the outside of the Dreamscape as a result of what happens inside. It would be fun to find out.
