Dolly Review: A Girl for All Time Lydia

By Ashley Brooke, Kewpie83 @KewpieDoll83

Back in December, I received an A Girl for All Time Lydia for review.  Needless to say, I couldn’t wait to share her with you! Well, today’s the day!  Lydia is the fourth release in the A Girl for All Time series, following Matilda, Amelia and Clementine.

Based in Georgian times, Lydia has a very exciting back story.  Her family is leaving their hometown of Bristol and boarding a ship to the American colonies, specifically Boston.  Not only is the Georgian era an important piece of British history, but it is important to US history, as well, seeing many of us US citizens have people in our family tree that have taken the same journey as Lydia and her family.

Lydia is 16″ tall and made of high quality vinyl.  She is jointed in her shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. Her head holds poses well and can move left and right, as well as tilts up and down!  Lydia is strung with thick string, which allows her to stand really well.  She’s a solid doll that has some weight to her.  There is no doubt Lydia, like the rest, is a quality doll.

There is one small hiccup in Lydia’s jointing. She’s strung, which makes her stand beautifully.  However, it also means her knee joints don’t like to stay bent down.  You’ll notice this when Lydia sits.  You can try to bend her knees, but they’ll just end up kicking back into place.  This isn’t a huge problem for me, as I would take Lydia’s amazing ability to stand over the ability to sit more naturally.

Lydia has long wigged hair that is black as night with a handful of dark brown hairs thrown in the mix.  They’re very, very hard to see, to the point where I’m not sure if these brown hairs are on all dolls or just mine.  Regardless, her dark hair is a good length for styling and looks great with the rest of Lydia’s features.  Because this is a wigged doll, I would recommend picking up a wig brush.  It will allow you to style her hair without hurting the wig.

Lydia has a gorgeous face!  It has Matilda’s long features and Clementine’s round shape.  Her pale peach vinyl makes her bold cobalt eyes pop.  Combined with her dark hair and natural face, Lydia’s appearance is striking.  She really is one of the prettiest dolls in my collection.  I love the regal sort of look she has and how she looks both inquisitive and pensive at the same time.

Lydia is dressed in a Georgian era fashion with an amazing amount of layers.  Her buttercup yellow outfit is pretty and fits Lydia well.  It looks like the fabric is prone to wrinkling, but that isn’t a huge issue for me.

If you unsnap the top layer of her outfit, you’ll see her slip and skirt.

Undo her skirt and you’ll find her bloomers.

That’s a total of total of four different pieces included in her outfit! I’m amazed they work together so well! Lydia wears buttercup yellow shoes and fish net like socks that go up to her calf.

Lydia comes with a hat, which is a nice perk.  Some dolls in the same size range require you to purchase hats separately, so it is nice that it’s included with this outfit. It’s a pretty hat and it adds character to Lydia, I think!  There is one small problem with it, however.  The elastic strap is white and it stands out a lot when Lydia is wearing it.  I would have preferred a hidden clip or a darker elastic.

I can’t find much fault in Lydia.  She’s a beautiful doll.  A Girl for All Time has fantastic sculpts on all their dolls, Lydia included, and that is the most important thing in my book!  Her joints work well enough for my tastes and she stands beautifully!  On top of all that, Lydia feels solid, which is always a good thing!

Watch the video review for even more photos.  (Some of my photos were lost between editing my video review and posting this review!)  Lydia is available for purchase in the UK and US via the A Girl for All Time website.  Besides the doll, fashions are also available.  Books are available for Matilda and Amelia, so I expect Lydia (and Clementine) will have books soon, as well.
