After the news that Matt Smith is leaving Doctor Who at the end of the year, discussion quickly switched to speculation on who will be the Doctor when Series 8 begins.  Well bookmakers William Hill and Ladbrokes have already placed odds on actors/actresses that could next pilot the TARDIS, and they don’t truly match up that well, showing just how up in the air it truly is.

Here are some of the favorites listed over at Ladbrokes:

  • Rory Kinnear (3/1)
  • David Harewood (4/1)
  • Ben Whishaw (5/1)
  • Benedict Cumberbatch (6/1)
  • Harry Lloyd (7/1)
  • Derek Jacobi (8/1)
  • Russel Tovey (9/1)
  • Alex Jennings (10/1)
  • Stephen Mangan (14/1)
  • Tom Hiddleston (16/1)
  • Helen Mirren (20/1)
  • Peter Capaldi (20/1)
  • David Tennant (20/1)
  • David Walliams (20/1)
  • Tim Wright (25/1)
  • Richard Armitage (25/1)
  • Daniel Radcliffe (25/1)
  • Tony Head (33/1)
  • Miranda Hart (33/1)
  • Hugh Laurie (33/1)

And here is the comparison with the odds from William Hill

  • Russell Tovey (10/1)
  • Rupert Grint (10/1)
  • David Harewood (12/1)
  • Rory Kinnear (12/1)
  • Ben Whishaw (14/1)
  • Andrew Scott (16/1)
  • Billie Piper (16/1)
  • Colin Morgan (16/1)
  • David Morrissey (16/1)
  • Martin Freeman (16/1)
  • Patterson Joseph (20/1)
  • Richard Coyle (20/1)
  • Tilda Swinton (20/1)
  • Tom Ellis (20/1)
  • Alan Davies (25/1)
  • Benedict Cumberbatch (25/1)
  • Ewan McGregor (25/1)
  • James Nesbitt (25/1)
  • Olivia Colman (25/1)
  • Rhys Ifans (25/1)

While a few of those names make you scratch your head (Billie Piper at 16/1, really?) others are some of the names that we saw mentioned when we asked who you’d like to see in the role, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Helen Mirren, Rupert Grint and Tom Hiddleson.

If you were to place a bet on which actor listed above will be the next Doctor, who would it be?
