I have always believed that the essence of a nation is its culture, the everyday life as well as the tourist destinations perhaps the less known places. Every time I see a typical village I am enchanting by these small realities.
Wandering through the beautiful Calabria region I discovered many small typical villages that preserve intact their beauty and the traditions. I start by saying that thanks to the great hospitality of the Calabresi I put on 3 kilos in a few days, even if my trip was itinerant and therefore not sedentary. The last problem was eating and drinking- wherever I stopped to talk with people. After half an hour I was talking with someone ( even if you have just known him/her), I was sitting at their table it in the company of the whole family without even realizing it. How wonderful!
One of the villages that I recommend you is definitely Diamante. Just to know where it is, it is in the province of Cosenza and overlooks the sea.

The sun, the sea and then the mature fruits on the trees affirm once more the great fertility of this land. In the face of this town - with many beaches and a promenade all tiled with stone compositions that overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea- you can see the small island of Cirella: a corner of green that stands in the crystal clear waters of the sea.In addition to being one of the areas witnessed of the Magna Graecia domination, Diamante does not seem to want to abandon the art. It goes in the XXI century with its beautiful murals that you can be admire in the whole village. The initiative to fill the city with murals was made in the 80s to re-evaluate the historical down town. This was a perfect choice! Diamante has become an outdoor exposure, a classic demonstration of the democratic art for everyone.
Let's suppose that we are pretentious and the magnificent landscape, the kindness of the people, the art and the beaches are not enough. We can always think about food! Are you more happy now? The lovers of the spicy will find The Academy of peperoncino here. When I have seen it I could not believe it! Yes, this product is so sacred to the Calabrian that they have created an academy, and - if we want to be precise - also a festival in September.

Do not miss the village of Cirella. The lovers of the history and the archeology can find prehistoric remains, a Roman mausoleum and the remains of a Roman villa here - as well as the more recent ducal palace that dates back to the eighteenth century.At the end the evening arrives and the days go by: why not sit in the theater and listen to a music performance? The Teatro dei ruderi organises a lot of shows in the summer and the problem will be whether to enjoy the show or enjoy the location. Dilemma!

Sono sempre convinta che l’essenza di una nazione sia nella sua cultura, nella sua quotidianità e anche nelle mete turistiche forse meno conosciute. Ogni volta che vedo un borgo rimango affascinata da queste piccole realtà. Girovagando per l’ affascinate regione Calabria ho avuto modo di scoprire piccoli paesi che conservano gelosamente intatti la loro bellezza e le tradizioni. Faccio una piccola premessa: la grande ospitalità dei Calabresi ha fatto sì che nonostante il mio fosse un viaggio itinerante e quindi non di tipo sedentario, io sia ingrassata in quell’occasione di tre chili in pochi giorni. L’ultimo dei problemi era, ovunque mi fermassi a parlare con le persone, mangiare e bere. Dopo una mezz’ora di chiacchierata con le persone che conoscevo sul luogo, mi trovavo seduta alla loro tavola senza neanche accorgermene in compagnia di tutta la famiglia. Che meraviglia! Uno dei borghi che suggerisco è sicuramente Diamante. Giusto per posizionarlo: questo piccolo comune si trova nella provincia di Cosenza e si affaccia sul mare.Il sole, il mare, i frutti maturi sugli alberi affermano una volta di più la grande fertilità di questa terra. Di fronte a questo comune con spiagge molto bella ed un lungo mare tutto piastrellato con composizioni in pietra che si affaccia sul Tirreno, si scorge la piccola isola di Cirella: una macchia di verde che si erge nel mare cristallino. Oltre ad essere stata una delle aree testimone della dominazione della Magna Grecia, Diamante sembra non voler abbandonare l’arte e si proietta nel XXI secolo con i suoi splendidi murales ammirabili in tutto il borgo. L’iniziativa di riempire la città dio murales è stata fatta negli anni ’80 per rivalutare il centro storico: Scelta azzeccatissima! Diamante è diventata una esposizione all’aria aperta. Classica dimostrazione di arte democratica rivolta a tutti. Diciamo che siamo dei pretenziosi e che non ci basta il magnifico panorama, la gentilezza delle persone, l’arte e le spiagge. Possiamo sempre pensare al cibo! Non vi mette allegria? Per gli amanti del piccante qui troverete L’accademia del peperoncino. Quando l’ho scoperto non potevo crederci. Ebbene sì, questo prodotto così sacro per i calabresi ha una sua accademia e ,s e vogliamo essere precisi ha anche un suo festival che di solito si svolge a settembre. Non tralasciate la frazione di Cirella, per gli amanti della storia e archeologia qui potete trovare resti preistorici, un mausoleo romano e i resti di una villa romana oltre a testimonianze più recenti quale il palazzo ducale che risale al XVIII secolo.Cala la sera e le giornate qui volano: perchè non sedersi a teatro e ascoltare uno spettacolo musicale? D’estate al teatro dei ruderi non mancheranno le occasioni e il problema sarà se godersi lo spettacolo o ammirare la location . bel dilemma!
