Devotionals and Trust

By Balancingonhoney @balancinghoney

Before I get into my trust spiel, I want to make a little announcement… Yesterday, I signed up to participate in Lindsay’s Foodie Pen Pal Program. She blogs at The Lean Green Bean, and created a program that allows you to partner up with someone to swap fun foodie things in the mail. The limit is $15, and can be anything from local goodies to homemade treats. You don’t have to have a blog to participate!

Trusting God Day by Day

This morning I opened up Joyce Meyer’s daily devotional, Trusting God Day by Day. To be honest, devotional books are sometimes hard for me to get into. I haven’t read very many, and the ones I have read have been good reads, but not quite relatable.

What is a Devotional?

When I first became a Christian, I would go to church and hear people say things like “in my devotional this morning… and I haven’t done my devotional yet.” In my head I was thinking, “Oh crap. What is a devotional… Use your context clues Amanda, it sounds sort of like a fancy quiet time.” (It also took me a bit to figure out that quiet time referred to your personal time spent reading your bible, praying, and talking with Jesus). Ok, so just incase, like me, you are wondering what exactly is a devotional, I have come to the conclusion it is also a term used for your “quiet time” with the Lord. Devotional books are short readings (not meant to be read all at once) to help you reflect and grow your relationship with God. They are a collection of short stories or scripture that are not meant to be read in one sitting.

You do not have to read a devotional book to spend time with God or grow a deeper relationship with Christ. They are merely a tool that is used to assist you in your spiritual growth.

Now Back to Trusting God.

The devotionals I have been reading the past three days have revealed much of what I lack in my relationship with the Lord. Trust. On the surface I can say of course I trust God, but if you look deeper you will see worry, anxiety, stress, and disdain. Those are not traits that reflect trust.

On January 28th I read, “We need to learn to not simply look to Him for results we desire, we need to learn to trust Him through the process of attaining them.” -Joyce Meyer

This season of my life is a process. Working part-time, pursuing a masters, and volunteering is all being done with some goals in mind. I want to see personal growth that will produce opportunities, purpose, and a career. I often get caught up in impatiently demanding an end result. Sometimes, I act as if I am certain that if things don’t start to happen now then they never will.
