DAYS OF IPHONE PAST: iPhone Vs Windows Phone 8.1

Posted on the 19 May 2014 by Geekasms @geekasms

DoiP1aIt’s iPhone vs Windows Phone 8.1 in normal daily use.

I have been an iPhone owner for over 5 years.  It is the only phone I’ve had or used.  Even when I’ve occasionally received trial phones from companies for review, I’ve not been able to break away from using my iPhone to give another phone a fair breakdown.  It’s a flaw that I admit to.  It’s just hard to break away from the familiarity of not only the OS, but the apps I’ve downloaded and purchased (I don’t want to know how much I’ve spent in the App Store) so a complete breakaway from the norm was a mountain I just continually chose not to take.  I know people prefer Android over Apple, and vise-versa.  My thing has simply been sticking to the convenience of it all.  I’ve become somewhat lazy and complacent in terms of the technology I use.  Then an opportunity presented itself to me, that forces me to step out of the box.  My girlfriend, who is also an avid iPhone user, found herself with a shattered screen a day away from a business trip, and me, well I had a perfectly good iPhone; mine, but also had a Nokia Lumia sitting around.  So I forced my own hand.  Giving up my iPhone so she could have a working and undamaged phone during her trip, and me, forcing myself to use a completely foreign phone and mobile OS.

So now, here I am, separated from the familiarity and comfort of an Apple iPhone, iOS, and the App Store.  I’m trying to get by and become familiar with a Windows Phone, running version 8.1, what apps are available, and how much of my normal mobile life I can maintain.  In the end, I plan on giving the phone a complete, thorough, and fair review, from the eyes of an iPhone user.  I am going to post my findings, triumphs, and failures over on my Tumblr page, with an occasional update here on the site as well.

So, you can follow my adventures with the Nokia Lumia 928 with Windows Phone 8.1 on Tumblr, or search for hashtag #DoiP (Days of iPhone Past)

If you are a Windows Phone developer or have an app you think I should check out, feel free to reach out to me on Twitter or shoot me at email at [email protected]

This is an adventure I’m not prepared to take in anyway, and I’ve jumped feet first into it.  For better or for worse.  Wish me luck.
