DAREDEVIL #2 Review

Mark Waid’s Daredevil has always been associated with two words: game changer. Whether we’re talking about the success of the title or Matt Murdock’s story, Waid’s tenure has made waves. The latest wave? Matt moves to San Francisco. Marvel stories are famous for their New York City backdrops, from Avengers Tower to the home of the Fantastic Four, and Murdock relocating feels like a chance for the character to explore something new.

The second issue featuring Matt in his new digs is no exception, as he gets more familiar with crime in his new surroundings and becomes more aware that though things might look familiar they are entirely different.  As the locals mention The Owl might be a serious threat in San Francisco, Matt laughs it off remarking Owl as a bottom feeder. It’s not mentioned in this issue, but if you were to peek inside Daredevil #1.5, there are hints that this may be a larger conflict in the future.

Another big strength to the book is Samnee’s art, remaining ever consistent and adaptive to the new setting. Though the city might have changed, the density of New York City and San Francisco is relatively the same allowing a smooth transition for how many people might occupy a scene and composition of the buildings. Of course, it’s always a fun scene watching Daredevil play around the Golden Gate Bridge. The more I think on it, the more I am growing to feel that it could be as iconic as Spiderman swinging on the Empire State Building.

So why should you read this book? Waid is a veteran writer, commanding a strong character, and assisted by the talents of Samnee. New situations that allow strong writers and artists a window to escape from the conventional are the stuff that great comics are made.  You don’t have to look far to find a reason to add this book to a pull folder, and personally, I am looking forward to see what Waid and Samnee will give as we see Matt romp about in San Fran.
