Dana Rebecca’s offerings for Resort 2014 can be summed up in a single word: pink. Offering a wide variety of earrings in three or four basic designs, this designer’s work is not in the realm of intense geometry, but rather in the search for spectacular gemstones and allowing them to steal the show with their natural properties. Those gems that are not utterly spectacular in and of themselves are carved into the shape of leaves or beautiful abstract shapes, a nerve-wracking process that can easily result in a cracked and useless stone. Watermelon tourmaline, meticulously carved rubellite, ruby, ruby zysoite, pink tourmaline, and other gemstones are accented with a plethora of baguette diamonds. Fantastic internal patterning suggests that each and every gemstone used in this work is hand-picked, which supports the price tag. Ranging from $3,600 to $12,000 for a single pair of earrings, the work of Dana Rebecca isn’t cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but such a price should be expected from what is essentially the burl wood of the gemstone world. To the designer’s credit, 70% of the designs put up for the Resort 2014 fashion week have already sold out. Better luck next season.
