Do you find yourself struggling to get out of bed in the winter far more frequently? The warm flannel sheets seem to create one of my biggest challenges for morning training, but I’m always that much happier when I unwrap myself from the cocoon of warmth and begin my run. The brisk air can be quite invigorating, and it’s a reminder of how far my running has come. It wasn’t that many years ago that the cold air burned my asthmatic lungs and gave me pause before stepping outside at all.

Run: 7.2 miles @ 8:58/mile. I decided to treat myself to a quick mid-week trail run out at Winterthur this morning, and I couldn’t have been happier with the choice. The brisk air and quiet, solitary frosted trails made for a wonderful wooded adventure. I pushed myself hard up and down the hilly landscape, repeating numerous hills, and even going off trail a bit to challenge my footing a bit more.
Thought: I’ve been thinking more lately about how I prioritize my time and how I spend my time. I seemingly always have a long list of items I need to do, but also items I want to do but haven’t found the time for consistently. Once I think about the time I spend on things that probably don’t matter and don’t necessarily contribute to my life as much, I realize that I really do have enough time each day to do everything I want. I just need to be more disciplined about cutting out the things that don’t matter. As I ramp up my training further this year, and set my sights on new and challenging goals, I never want to feel like training is a chore. It never has, but I think it’s easy for us to forget that ensuring it doesn’t become a chore involves work and focus. How do you maintain that focus? Do you think about eliminating seemingly wasted time from your day? It’s a question worth considering regardless of your activity level or goals!
