Babies – These little bundles of joy are greatest gifts from God. When they come out of the womb they are so teeny-tiny that you think they are perfect.
There are a few facts about babies that no one seems to know and surprise them when they see it. Babies of course are like us, but it takes some time for their body to develop and work like ours does.
Here are some interesting and crazy secrets about babies that you might have not been exposed to before:
1) New Born Babies do no shed tears:
Tear ducts of babies don’t get developed for 2-3 months after they are born. So even babies may seem unhappy and wail, scream or screech, and yet they just won’t shed any tears.
2) Body Hair:
Few babies are born with hair all over their body, especially those babies who are born early.
This body hair is called lanugo and is perfectly harmless. It is to help the baby regulate his or her body temperature in the mother womb.
For some babies they fall off in the womb itself and for the rest, they will shed a few days or weeks after they are delivered.
3) They can’t taste salt:
Babies can taste everything except for salt. Somehow the taste buds that sense the taste of salt is never developed early in life.
4) Eye colour darken as they grow:
Most babies are born with light shades of eyes such as blue and light brown. This is because the pigmentation of the iris doesn’t start until a few weeks later.
So don’t be surprised to find your baby sport black eyes after a few weeks of light brown or blue based on the melanin levels in his or her body.
5) Babies are born with more bones than adults:
Babies have around 300 bones when they are born and as they grow their bones fuse to form lesser bones that we now have as adults.
6) Babies are born without kneecaps:
Babies might have more bones than adults but they fail to have these two bones in place – that is the knee caps. Of course the cartilage is present but they haven’t hardened to that extent to form bones.
The process of hardening of the kneecaps happens only when the child is between 3 and 5 years of age.
7) Boy babies have swollen scrotum and erections:
Do not panic to see your little boy having erections, as his body is only tuning up his nerves and nervous system.
And in the case of a big groin area, it might be due to the fact that your boy might be holding a little extra hormones or fluids from the womb.
It will all disappear in time, so don’t worry.
8) Baby girls have periods:
Do not get horrified if you spot few drops of blood in your baby girl’s diaper. All that estrogen and other hormones cross over from the mom to the baby in the womb.
9) Babies lactate:
A lot of babies lactate believe it or not. While your breasts are getting ready to feed your new born, the same hormones are soaked up by the baby. So when the baby is born, ta-da you have milk coming out of their breast ducts.
