Coppercraft Rye Whiskey Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

The last in our Coppercraft line up, the Coppercraft Rye Whiskey is the first whiskey we’re trying that contains anything distilled by Coppercraft themselves. This whiskey is a blend of their own distilled 95/5 spirit and MGP 95/5 rye spirit. Their own being aged for 2 years and the MGP for 4 years.

Another approach I have no problem with; blending your own aged distillate into even older sourced whiskey. Virginia Distillery did it with their port single malt to great success and it also works well here. So long as it’s all disclosed it’s all good.

Coppercraft Rye Whiskey Review: Details and Tasting Notes

A blend of sourced rye and distilled rye, the Coppercraft Rye Whiskey comes together in a mega spice bomb of a whiskey.

In Coppercraft’s Words: Coppercraft Rye Whiskey

Our award-winning rye moves across your palate, first with hints of cocoa and malt, then kicks in with a peppercorn spice that is distinctly rye and finishes smooth with a hint of sweetness. A limited release in 2018, look for it to hit shelves later this year.

Coppercraft Rye Whiskey Review: OVERALL

Coppercraft Rye Whiskey Review

The aroma of the Coppercraft Rye Whiskey isn’t overly exciting; it’s good, it’s inviting and it boldly screams RYE, but it’s not anything to call the family into the room over. The palate however… that’s a different story: I wasn’t expecting the massive spice bomb detonation that pleasantly ripped across my tongue and down my throat.

In the pantheon of sensory alluring whiskey a bold, brash and banging rye sits in the top three and this hits all the notes I want and then some. The only thing I wish I got more of was some oaky depth. Outside of that, this is 5-ton spice bomb that I’m enjoying through and through. Grab it if you can!

SCORE: 87/100 (B+)
