Contouring For Dummies

By Nina B @newshoesintown

Contouring the face for a desired shape is a makeup task I like put in the 'too hard' or 'special occasion only' basket. My first serious crack at this task involved some dark foundation, we're talking MAC Studio Tech in NC45 here (for reference I'm NC 35/ NC37, C3), but having two foundations just to create dimension seems a bit OTT for me. Ain't nobody got time for that.
This post is about two 'all in one' type powder products designed to make contouring a walk in the park. The first one is the NARS Virtual Domination Cheek Palette (US$65). While this is a blush heavy smorgasbord of NARS favourites, the Laguna bronzer and the Miss Liberty make a really good combo. For those who skip blush (I don't know why you would do this to yourself but okay), the Contour Blush Duo (US$42 / NZ$66) might be a better option.
Another product is the Australis AC ON Tour Contouring & Highlighting Kit (NZ$21.50) This contains six powders: three for contouring and three for highlighting. The highlight shades consist of two mattes that are best used as setting powders, especially that yellow based one in the middle. It's good for setting concealer under the eyes. Think of it as an entry level pressed version of Ben Nye Banana Powder. The third one has a lustrous finish that nicely illuminates.
The contouring shades all have a matte finish and are great for under the cheekbones, temples, hairline, tip of the nose (Optional! Sometimes dark nose contouring can dramatically change the face and really depends if your dig it or not). Like Laguna, these shades are also good to use as a transition in the crease of the eye.
What tips and products can you offer contouring dummies?
PS - When I say contouring dummy, I'm referring to myself. This photo was quickly taken after drinks one sunny afternoon because I thought I had enough knowledge to write about Asian Flush. Turns out I don't.
