Modern art fairs: Arco 2012, Just Mad and Art Madrid.
Last week I made a full inmersion on three important contemporary, modern and abstract art fairs taking place in Madrid (Spain).
Arco 2012 (top contemporary art fair in Spain) was dissapointing. I expected more unknown international contemporary art and more risk taking by galleries. Although I discovered few (very few) interesting modern artists, and saw pieces of already consolidated ones (like the above Sarah Morris painting), the overall valuation was poor.
Some examples of the abstract and contemporary art I liked are the following:
The below picture is an interesting abstract painting from a Trieste gallery called Torbandena. I like how the contemporary artist applies color and the overall movement that catches your eyes.
From a Dutch comtemporay art gallery called Reflex, these interesting and huge modern paintings by Harlland Miller. I like the way he plays with form, a known object, words and color.
And to finish, this beautiful and cold piece by Dan Flavin, one of the most interesting american minimalists.
The next fair we visited was JustMad. I recommend this contemporary art fair to any one. The overall ambient was fresh, modern and authentic. I was impressed by the friendly relatioshinp you could stablish with gallerists.
….I could not stop watching the always captivating contemporary sculptures by Samuel Salcedo.
The one below it´s me
Finally we visited ArtMadrid. It is an exemple of a typical modern art fair. The difference with Arco, is that this one is more “classical” and almost 100% of the artists exibited where Spanish. Overall valuation so, so..
At ArtMadrid I took the above picture. It´s and abstract painting of a comtemporary artist called Mercé (sorry but I haven´t found her website). It was color, form and freshness what took my atention.
After visiting the 3 fairs, we went to meet Eduardo Vega de Seoane at his studio in Madrid.
We had a great experience with him. This friendly, cheerful contemporary abstract artist, explained us his artistic history, his current creative process, and he showed us some of his newest abstract paintings that we deeply commented.
You will agree with me that the way he applies color, and uses random overlaped forms and lines is fascinating. His abstract paintings and personal style is quite unique and worth adquiring.
