The Powerful Women in Pop Culture panel was the first True Blood related panel of Comic Con 2012 for me. It featured the lovely Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pamela Sywnford de Beaufort) who was joined by Lucy Lawless (Spartacus), Anna Torv (Fringe), Sarah Wayne Callies (The Walking Dead), Nikki Reed (The Twilight Saga), and Kristin Kreuk (Smallville/Beauty and the Beast).
Going into this panel, I was really excited to see how it would go. The group of women assembled for it are extremely accomplished both in terms of the characters they play on television and in their lives outside of the show. While the panel turned out well, I thought it could have been better. It seemed to me that there was a disconnect during the panel between the characters the actors play and the actors themselves. A lot of the questions posed to the panelists were general for the most part and in a setting where this group of people worked with one another a lot or knew each other, general questions would have been fine because they could have played off one another.
But I got the feeling that while each of the panelists knew of each other’s work, they didn’t know each other well. So I thought it would have helped if some of the questions provided a bit more context as to why Entertainment Weekly felt that these women were powerful women in pop culture. I myself didn’t necessarily know why other than assuming it had something to do with the characters these women play on television. However, just because they play powerful women on television doesn’t necessarily mean the actors consider themselves powerful women in pop culture personally. And from the way the questions were posed to them, it seemed like Lynette Rice was trying to elicit why their characters were powerful women in pop culture and why they themselves were women who kicked ass.
However, without specific examples given by the moderator, there were some awkward moments. But the best moment had to be when Kristin walked out wearing part of the infamous yellow sweatsuit.
