In the throes of August (which still feels completely ridiculous to be typing…how is it physically possible that we’re about to enter the last 4th of 2014?!) It’s only right to celebrate its verdant birthstone peridot. Peridot is a bright green gem that’s decidedly warmer than emerald or tsavorite or jade. It’s a uniquely colored gem that’s grassy enough to represent the bright, last month of summer, but its warm undertones ease the transition into fall’s very warm shades of yellow, orange, and crimson. If you’ve never thought of the year/seasons as a color wheel before, you’re welcome. But it’s all about one color today: green. Peridot green to be precise. Peridot gets its inimitable golden green from iron deposits within the gem. The first peridots date back to ancient Egypt, and the gem comes chiefly from the Middle East – specifically Pakistan and Afghanistan. The best peridots – those with the richest and most vibrant color and clarity – come from the iron rich earth of Kashmir. And like sapphires, branded “Kashmir Peridots” are the most valuable. Unlike sapphires, peridots come in one color and one color only: that glorious bright green (in fact it’s one of the only gems that stands by its hue. Like FBO all the way.) Like most gems, the better the clarity, and the purer the deep green of the peridot, the greater its value. Luckily, wearing even super high equality peridot is relatively affordable. A diamond of similar size would be a lot more expensive – so it would make a fabulous alternative engagement ring, or even a lovely push present for Mama’s whose due dates are in August…a-n-y day now.
