“Coconut Oil Pulling”

By Balancingonhoney @balancinghoney

Allergies make… me….. lethargic… foggy… and less than feeling 100 percent. Now that I am in the barn spending most of my days, riding or giving lessons in a dusty arena sand storm, I try to remember to take my allergy medicine everyday.

This morning, I woke up with the typical scratchy throat, stuffy nose, and foggy brain. After brushing my teeth and washing my face, I went to the kitchen, poured myself a big glass of water, and remembered something a friend had told me to do to help allergies.

Coconut Oil Allergy Remedy

I know coconut oil claims to have many uses, but I am only going to tell you about one because I have tried it.

While at church one morning, a friend of mine was telling me how amazing coconut oil was for curing allergies. I thought to myself, okay, yea, I know coconut oil has a lot of great things about  it, but what caught my attention was her description of how to use it for allergies.

You take a spoonful of the stuff, and hold it in your mouth, than when you are done you spit it out. I thought really? You just keep it there and then spit it out? She told me it does wonders for your sinuses, clearing all that build up out. She also told me that mucus drains out like a running faucet. Ew, but awesome.

I haven’t had the courage to try it until today.

I took my spoon-full and held it on my tongue for three minutes (that was what my friend suggested). The oil began to melt in my mouth, which was a very strange feeling. After the three minutes, I spit it out in the trash. *Warning* Do not spit in the sink because the oil could solidify and clog it.

I didn’t feel any different right away, but in about 10  minutes later, my nose started to drain and clear up. I was amazed! While I type this, I am still wiping/blowing my nose with tissue and feeling happy with the results.

I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t to feel as clear headed as I do now, so I decided to do some research and find out what the internet has to say about this crazy allergy remedy.

I discovered that it actually has a name, “oil pulling”, and I did it wrong. Most of the article suggests swishing not just holding it there and do it for 20 minutes not three. I had results after just three minutes, think about what 20 could do!

The other thing I learned is you definitely don’t want to gargle or swallow it because it is pulling toxins from your mouth (Mind Body Green).

I also learned that “oil pulling” does more than just clear up sinus congestion, and I will let you read about it in these articles:

I plan making “Oil Pulling”  part of my morning routine at least a few times a week.  I will be sure to let you know how the 20 minutes works out for me…
