Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Cianciana in Sicily. We are in the province of Agrigento to 390 meters high. This village was the seat of the Greeks, the Romans, the Arabs for the presence of a salt mine and it was useful to navigate the river Platani. Today is one of the expressions of the still authentic Sicily. In this magnificent town you have not be in a hurry: you have to appreciate the quietly and joyfully atmosphere to understand – partially – the value of this village. Cianciana has shared the daily life for years with the sulfur mines - where the inhabitants were partly occupied.
What can you visit in this village?
The clock tower that dominates the country: it is a fascinating architecture of the nineteenth century. The palace Joppolo dated back to the Saracen invasion: it was a sighting tower but it was later transformed into a livable palace with the addition of the windows and the balconies. The beautiful fountains of the city (one is a miniature of the Sicily).

After the visit will not be in a hurry to leave: the kindness of the people, the relaxed atmosphere and the Christmas time -added to the good food - are essential for your holiday. Stay here until Christmas and you will have a very special experience. Consider the fact that the religious concept- especially in the village - is much more rooted: so most of the traditions are linked to the Catholic faith. One of the oldest Christmas novena in Sicily is done in Cianciana. What is a novena? A novena of prayer and intercession is an ancient tradition of the Church: so a moment of prayer. The faithful gather in the church at 5:30 in the morning for nine days (from 16 to 24 December – even if all the novena stops at 6 Janaury). The parish church also offers the breakfast to all the faithful and all together spend a jovial time.So the nativity scene comes. Its headquarter is in the district Canallello where all the people participate in this event by reconstructing the collective atmosphere of Bethlehem on the streets of the neighborhood: a well-organized representation where if you are in Cianciana during the event, you feel to be projected onto the scene of the birth of the baby Jesus .
Whether you are Catholic or not, does not matter: it is still a charming and traditional event that I suggest you share. So you want an unusual Christmas? Come Cianciana ... you will have a lot of thing to tell!

Siete ancora indecisi su dove andare per Natale? Ho un suggerimento: unite il piacere di visitare un borgo tipico delle vera Sicilia con l’ammirare una delle manifestazioni più belle legate al presepe. Signori e signore, benvenuti a Cianciana in Sicilia. Siamo nella provincia di Agrigento a 390 metri di altezza sorge questo borgo che fu sede dei greci, dei romani, degli arabi per la presenza di una salina vicino e per la comodità di navigare sul fiume Platani ed oggi è una delle espressioni di una Sicilia ancora autentica. In questo magnifico borgo non bisogna avere fretta: l’atmosfera va assaporata con calma e con gioia per capirne almeno in parte il valore. La vita di Cianciana per anni ha condiviso la quotidianità con le miniere di zolfo dove erano in parte occupati gli abitanti. Cosa potete visitare in questo borgo? La torre dell’orologio che domina sul paese: è una struttura architettonica dell’ottocento ricca di fascino. Il palazzo Joppolo che risale all’invasione saracena in queste terre, era una torre di avvistamento ma fu poi trasformata in palazzo abitabile con aggiunta di finestre e balconi. LA belle fontane della città ( una rappresenta la Sicilia in miniatura). Finita la visita non abbiate fretta di andarvene: la gentilezza degli abitanti, l’atmosfera festosa di natale e rilassata a cui aggiungiamo il buon cibo sono elementi fondamentali per la vacanza. Fermatevi qui fino a natale e avrete un’esperienza molto particolare. Considerate il fatto che il concetto religioso soprattutto nei paesi è molto più radicato: quindi gran parte delle tradizioni sono legate alla fede Cattolica. Nella tradizione del paese si pratica una delle più antiche novene natalizie siciliane. Che cosa è la novena? Una novena di preghiera e d'intercessione è un'antica tradizione della Chiesa: quindi un momento di preghiera. I fedeli si riuniscono alle 5:30 della mattina per nove giorni cioè dal 16 al 24 dicembre. La parrocchia offre poi la colazione a tutti i fedeli e per poter passare un momento gioviale insieme. Ed ecco arrivare il presepe vivente. LA sua sede è nel quartiere Canallello dove gli abitanti partecipano a questo evento collettivo ricostruendo l’atmosfera di Betlemme per le strade del quartiere: una rappresentazione ben organizzata dove, trovandocisi al momento sembra di essere proiettati sulla scena della nascita del bambino Gesù. Che voi siate cattolici o meno non importa: è comunque una manifestazione suggestiva e tradizionale che vi suggerisco di condividere. Quindi volete un natale insolito?
