Child Safety

Kody after his accident

As a mother I am always on my toes, with a 3, 4 and 5 year old in the house, you can only imagine the sheer terror I feel when the house is quiet.

Child safety is a huge issue for all parents, we all want to keep our children safe but sadly unless we have eyes in the back of our heads, accidents do happen.

I have locks on my kitchen cupboards and fridge.

We have a washing machine and tumble dryer with a child safety lock on.

We have always had child safety gates up until recently.

I even had cushioned corners on furniture that had sharp edges.

We have a lock on the outside of the bathroom door as the younger children have made so many cocktails from shampoos and bath products that I have lost count.

Child safety is one of the most important aspects when raising young children as they are so inquisitive and show no fear.

If the child is quiet, something valuable is probably broken is a motto I live by.

We have been busy decorating and after we had finished the living room, the question was were we ready to take down the fire guard. We have as most parents too a large safety guard that corners off the whole of the gas fire.

I admit it took up room and looked out of place with the nice new decor.

Kody is now 3 and he knows not to touch the fire, to be honest we don’t even use the fire but taking down that fire guard filled me with dread.

All parents know the safety aspects behind using a car seat and ensuring children wear seat beats in a car, the home is no different, there are so many accidents just waiting to happen.

The most severe injuries  that happen in the home are associated with heat-related accidents and falls from a height. Older children are more likely to sustain fractures than younger counterparts.

Younger children have a higher percentage of burns and scalds as well as poisoning and ingestion accidents

The largest number of accidents happen in the living/dining room. However, the most serious accidents happen in the kitchen and on the stairs.

Every year more than 67,000 children experience an accident in the kitchen – 43,000 of these are aged between 0-4 years; 58,000 children have accidents on the stairs. (Resource; rospa.com)

Is it any wonder we stress about child safety?

From the moment we know we are pregnant we start looking around the house debating what changes we need to make in preparation for the baby.

They soon become mobile and then there is no stopping them.

You can buy quality health and safety products at cheap prices so there really is no need not to prevent accidents and do all you can to keep your child safe.

I will never forget the day Kody slipped from the side of the sofa and landed in a rather weird way, he fractured his collarbone. I felt guilty for weeks, although there was nothing I could of done, he is simply a boy who loves to climb.

There are suppliers such as PureSafety who are great as you can shop online from the comfort of your own home and have the items you need delivered straight to your door.

Don’t wait around thinking it will never happen, that your child will always listen to you, they don’t. Make child safety a priority on your list today.
