The Chew/Revival one-shot is one of those books that totally confuse you. Two titles that have no business being together, but here they are and believe it or not, they work. We actually get two separate issues, one told from the Chew point of view and one from Revival. I haven’t read either book in a while, but I was curious enough that I had to check this out.
We start out with the Chew side of things and Tony Chu and his partner, Colby, are sent to Wisconsin to investigate a dismemberment case. It just happens to be the same town that Revival is set in. If you aren’t familiar with that story, basically, all the people that died on one particular day came back to life. There is plenty of the famous Chew humor in this story along with the even more famous grossness of Tony eating whatever he needs to so that he can get a clue to solving the case. It’s a fun story that I actually enjoyed quite a bit.
Then we switch over the Revival side of things. I haven’t read this series outside of the first few issues so I’m a little lost as to what is going on, but this is still a pretty self contained story. Seeing Tony Chu done in a “normal” style is a little odd, but they do spice up the story with a little more humor than I was expecting on this side of things. There is a crazy Polka song, a fingernail and some creepy dancing corpses to name just a few of the disturbing things you see. Oh, and the creepy soul creatures that I kind of remember from the early issues I read.
I’m not sure which book I found more disturbing. I enjoyed the Chew issue more, but the Revival story weirded me out. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go drop a Mosinee.
