Out of all of Madonna’s songs, I remember hearing this one most on the radio growing up. I think I had the cassette too (yes, I said cassette) and I listened to it as a kid. I can’t really say I’m a fan of Madonna’s music anymore but this is one of those songs that is relatable.
Cherish was released in August of 1989 from her fourth album, Like a Prayer. It was written by Madonna and Patrick Leonard about love & relationships, inspired by Romeo & Juliet. The lyrics describe devotion to a partner and promising to be by their side forever.
Songfacts states that Madonna wrote it about her then-husband Sean Penn. However, when the song was finally released as a single, the two had filed for divorce. So much for devoted, right?
Anyways, above is the official video. Madonna once told Rolling Stone that she has never been a good judge on which of her songs would be successful. Usually the ones she thought were the most corny turned out to be the biggest hits. Go figure.
