Charbay Doubled and Twisted Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

What happens when you take a single malt whisky, a whiskey made from stout beer, a whiskey made from pilsner and blend them together?  Well, you’d get Charbay Doubled and Twisted that’s what. A custom blend of whiskies created to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the distillery and created by their master distiller Marko.

Charbay Doubled and Twisted

Now, it’s no secret I’m not the biggest fan of Charbay. Even the much beloved Charbay 3 I’m not a huge fan of. There’s something about it that just doesn’t hit my senses right; I think it’s the hops distilling. I don’t care for any of the other brands that do it either, like Corsair, and the commonality is the use of hops or distilled hoppy beer… but I like IPAs. Anyways, keep that in mind when reading the review below. It just doesn’t seem to be my thing.

In Charbay’s Words: Charbay Doubled and Twisted

“Doubled & Twisted combines the best of the years since that first thesis project (a departure from Charbay’s award winning hoppy whiskeys), a double Alambic pot distilled blend of 50% Aged Single Malt (3 year); 30% Aged Stout Whiskey (7 year); and 20% Aged Pilsner Whiskey (3 year). The final juice exudes floral, green spice notes, warm aromas of baking spices (nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, allspice) and oak-smoked malted barley. French and American Oak impart flavors from smoky, toasted vanilla to dark roasted coffee.”

Charbay Doubled and Twisted Review: OVERALL

Charbay Doubled and Twisted Review

Charbay Doubled and Twisted is interesting and before I get into my overall thoughts here let me preface it by saying I’ve never been a huge fan of Charbay. It’s a style I’m just not wild about, but my fellow LAWS members seem to be quite fond of. Personal taste and all that; anyways.

The aroma is crazy potent with the “Heineken skunk” flowing freely at first, but fading after a bit to a more subtle position, same on the palate. After a bit of air and time the hops jump straight to the top and the citrus is a bit like grapefruit and kinda reminds me of the Corsair Citra Double IPA, but a bit less aggressive and a bit more complex.

Regardless it’s not a bad whiskey and if you’re a fan of other Charbay releases you’re probably going to love this.

SCORE: 84/100 (B)

Charbay Doubled and Twisted Review Summary

Charbay Doubled and Twisted is alright. It’s not my thing, but based on my experience with Charbay I’d say that if you’re typically a fan of their style then you’d probably like this too.
